Line 50 - Poor Performance over VPN

Post by peterjprice » 05 Sep 2006, 18:07

Hope you can help me. I am accessing my company accounts from home over a VPN connection. My internet speed is fast (8Mb) and my VPN works great. Only problem is Sage Line 50 is very slow at drawing the accounts data.

I've configured my antivirus software to ignore the Sage data files, turned off my firewall, setup the network optimisation feature (under tools) and setup server side reporting (tools/options), but using the software to do any work is practically impossible as its so slow!

I also use Act for Workgroups over my VPN connection and that works fine.

Please help! I dont' know what else to do to quicken Line 50 up.

Thanks,

Peter.

PS. I have the lastest build of version 11 (11.01.0035)

I assume that you have 8Mb ADSL, this is asymmetric and your upload is actually between 250KB and 700KB this will be the limiting factor.

Sage performs badly on a 10MB network, 100MB is Better and 1Gig is best, this is simply as a result of the way that Sage handles it's database, unlike ACT it does not use an SQL database for it's back end, it actually trawls through all the data to find things. This makes it slow on ordinary networks, to find it is even slower on a VPN at 0.7MB is no surprise, indeed I would have thought it was unusable on a VPN.

The best solution is to use remote access to a desktop on the actual network and run sage on a pc in the office. VNC works fine and is worth having in the office anyway otherwise the best commercial options are "go to my pc" www.gotomypc.com or if you run a Windows server you could use terminal services.

There is "rumour" of a web based version of Line 50 coming.

I have heard this before and then found it to be running on Terminal services, but apparently this is in a browser.

As with all rumours I take it with a large pinch of salt and will believe it when I see it.

It works, but I wouldn't want to use it for very long, with firefox, there seemed to be a few rendering problems and I guess it is all MS based and would really run better in IE, some things like adding a product line seemed a bit silly, you click on a button to open a form (in a new windows!) then you need to add a product code and the only way to do that is to click on a button and open another from (another window).

The functionality IS there but the user interface is "clunky" I think it would need a lot of java to make this behave like a desktop interface.

If you want to enter lots of orders on a web interface, then perhaps using a web shop would be a better way.

Certainly it would work for emergency use, but I have to wonder what market it is aimed at.

For functionality I would choose a remote desktop solution, it would deliver sage and all my other desktop applications.

The kind of place where I think this could be a useful interface is for customers where perhaps they could see there account details, track orders and things like that.

Possibly do things in credit control like notify disputes on invoices...

Line 50 web and mobile accessing functions

Post by PeterChen » 20 Sep 2006, 23:52

This test site is a technical demo platform to show our technical capability. We are adding more functions to the test site.

We do not try to replace Sage Line 50 interface, just give Line 50 users more flexibility by adding web browser and mobile (PDA) accessing functions.

The requirements we got from our customers normally focus on order processing, stock controls and some financial functions like invoice status, credit controls and so on. Most of them need customised interface and add extra functions for them which cannot get from Line 50, such as multi warehouse location.
