ODBC Table Links

Post by gazjones » 31 Jul 2012, 14:13

I am not even a relative newbie, but a completely new one :-)

Having no knowledge of report designer in Sage I have fallen back to my comfort zone trying to write reports in MSExcel via ODBC tables. I am unsure how to link tables, for example, I have imported a range of data into Project Costing and dont know how to link the static project info to the dynamic project transactions to give me a list of my transactions by project number?

Am I missing the obvious ?

Any help would be appreciated 8)

There is no definitive document that I know of that give all the joins.

I can only suggest a couple of ways to do this.

1 look at the tables and "see" what the join is
2 open an existign report and go to data>joins and look to see what the joins are there.

3 if you get really stuck, ask here!

I think you are trying to link PROJECT to PROJECT_TRAN

In each you will find a Field called PROJECT_ID

Looking in the report designer these are linked via the PROJECT_RELATIONSHIP and DESCENDENT_PROJECT Tables as below but I think you can link direct.

PROJECT.PROJECT_ID>PROJECT_RELATIONSHIP.ANCESTOR_ID
PROJECT_RELATIONSHIP.DESCENDENT_ID>DESCENDENT_PROJECT.PROJECT_ID
DESCENDENT_PROJECT.PROJECT_ID>PROJECT_TRAN.PROJECT_ID

Might I suggest trying Microsoft Query which is part of your Excel package, great way of visually building 90% of your queries without any great db/SQL knowledge.
