BOM Problems

Hi All

I have started using the BOM facility to create packs of items we sell (e.g. we sell product ABC1, we also sell product ABC1-PACK5 which is x5 of ABC1 etc).

Most of the BOM's I have done are fine - when the 'PACK' code is sold the stock goes into a negative, I then highlight the product line. hit the 'Transfer' button and Sage subtracts the appropiate number of product from the original ABC1 product code.

My issue is that for a couple of the product codes the BOM link isn't holding. Whenever I go to 'Transfer' the link is not there and I have to set it up again. I have noticed that there seems to be some sort of record of all my previous attempts as whenever I have to set the BOM up again the 'Link Level' counter has gone up by one.

It is perplexing, and a pain in the backside, as most I have set up are holding the info...any ideas appreciated

NB I am running version 16.0.17.0158 (Sage Line 50 Accounts Professional 2010) on Windows XP.

Are you including BOMS within BOMS?

Hmm, strange one Martin.

First, start with File > Maintenance > Check Data. Any errors?

Second, backup and try a Reindex & Compress of your data, again via File > Maintenance. Before you do this, browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sage\Accounts > Open Sage.ini and in the second line add "compressusingfilesize=1" (without the "").

Next, Tools > Period End > Clear Stock to 01/01/1980.

Then check the link levels to see if they are correct. If not, it sounds like you have stock corruption.

Also, could you try running the Product Explosion report for ABC1, from Products > Reports > Product Explosion & BOM reports to see if the report thinks that it has any sub components.

There is also a report available (if you have SageCover) called the Reverese Product Explosion report which can be ran on a product with a link level to see what it makes up. You can get this from here.

Thanks for the tips Happiness - I shall give them a go today.

The only thing I can think of that may have some bearing on this is that I have recently starting linking single-item prodcut codes to others (e.g. DEF1 is the same product as ABC1 but sold in a different channel, DEF1 doesn't have its own stock so I have BOM-linked it to ABC1). Perhaps I should just take the easier option and assign some stock to it...

If they are linked then I assume they are a BOM with 1 item.

You have gone there, you are using Boms within Boms.

The "level" is the Bom within the Bom level

In normal circumstances this is 1

I think you may have created a never ending loop, eg

Nothing untoward cropped up on the file-checking etc - does anybody know how to un-BOM everything en-masse?

Think I will start again but take the safer option of just applying some stock to the packs etc.

Sounds good to me Bruce.

I suppose 'resetting' the BOM's is only half of the job we need - going forwards we would like to (if possible) automate the transfer system that updates the stock that is BOM-linked (as well as ensuring that are BOM's are not going to go pear-shaped as they seem to have at the moment).
