I have client who obtained Sage 2007 as part of Barclays Professionals banking package a few years ago. The product came packaged in a Barclays folder, not a normal Sage disk, but has seemed and operated just as Sage. They have run their accounts for 4 years with no problems on the package. This year they stopped banking with Barclays and as a result can no longer access their Sage package (it was linked with the Barclays business software and says the licence is no longer valid).
They have always kept regular backups with no problems. I have tried to restore their latest backup onto my Sage 2011 version to prepare the VAT return. The backup seems to restore with no problems. However, while all nominal, customer and supplier balances are shown, when you drill down and click on Activity there is no history on screen. Yet you can print all the usual reports and all the history is there, and when the audit trail is viewed on screen it seems to be complete.
I wondered whether taking it from Sage 2007 to Sage 2011 was a step too far and so I have reinstalled an old Sage 2008 version and tried the restore. An error box does appear (Error creating file C:\PROGRAM FILES\SAGE\ACCOUNTS\NTUSER.INI) and the restore is reported as unsuccessful. Yet when the conversion is completed the result seems to be as above, all balances are there, reports are fine - yet no nominal/customer/supplier history on screen.
The client is reluctant to continue posting in case of a problem, but a VAT return is due imminently and the situation is now urgent.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Sage restore problem - urgent
Restoring a 2007 backup into 2011 should be no problem at all.
I assume if you run Check Data, there are no errors?
If not, try running ReIndex and Compress and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I resorted to manually preparing the VAT return, which did not take as long as expected.
Yes the Check Data is ok (apart from the usual 'comments'). I have tried the Re-Index and Compress but there is no change. It is very strange.

Re: Sage restore problem - urgent
It sounds very much like a data corruption issue on the index which Johns suggestion should fix.
I wonder if they ran check data before backing up each time... and the data is broken?
Could try restoring to V2007 and see if things are good there.

When you go into the activity screen , just check the custom range settings at the top left for the dates that are displayed. Also in the Customer and Supplier Activity , there is a small checkbox at the top right of the screen labelled O/S only . Make sure that this is not ticked.
