Difference between Clear Audit Trail & Archive at Year End

Hi there,
I have a client with thousands of transactions dating back to 2003.
I have tried to BF to the next year, but Sage hangs/crashes. Assumed this is because of the huge Audit Trail.
I understand that if I clear the Audit Trail, I will never see the cleared items again - they're basically deleted.
If my client wouldn't want this to happen, what sort of results could I achieve by archiving during the YE procedure? Would the archived files still be accessible?
Many thanks.

If it crashing, my first concern would be corrupt data - if you run Check Data, do you get any errors?

It could well be that it is not hanging, just VERY VERY busy, leave it a couple of hours and see.

NOTE that transactions will not all be removed, there are a bunch of conditions that need to be met for a transaction to be removed.

There is some stuff in my year end guide about it.
