NAS as Server?

Hi,
had speed problems with SL50v12, so upgraded network to Gigabit; all pc's have gigabit NICs, gigabit switch behind wireless router providing DHCP, All pc's are windows XP, all cabling renewed, backup to Buffalo Gigabit NAS drives (2). The Sage server is now on a Buffalo NAS drive - was on a pc but this slowed access drastically.
3 users are regularly connected to Sage, but 2 others can join them when things are busy. Originally in this format - when only 2 users connected (someone on holiday  ) - worked sweetly, now 3 connections not so good. One of the machines will lock up - dreaded eggtimer - and others will then follow.
Is this a problem with hosting on NAS without a processor to control it?
Server Side reporting NOT set up as not able to change it on the "server", but will look at this on the clients tommorrow.
Any input appreciated.
Thanks, Neil.

Serverside reporting is not an option with NAS.

My only experiance with inexpensive NAS boxes was a bad one huge amount of hassle way beyond the cost savings of NAS over a Linux Server.

My immediate thought is to check that all clients are all running the same version of the software and that they are up to date with the latest patches.

Did this problem happen using the windows server with the same clients?

I have been waiting since posting for it to happen again - but running sweet since. The users cannot recall if there was anything else happening at the time
Server Side not applied. The updates had not been applied to any of the clients since dec 05, now rectified.
The reason to change was the problem with the windows server causing delays - to one client in particular.
May be back if any more trouble - thanks for the help.
Neil.
