Hi people,
Is there anyway while under products to get the 'free stock' value (quantity in stock - quantity allocated) shown as a column? It would be really nice if there was as I'm getting fed up with sales people looking at the stock while on the phone and saying 'yes we have xyz' in stock when in reality we don't.

No you can't
My suggestion would be to remove the qty in stock column (which you can do). Or better still remove all access right to the products module from the sales people.
If a customer wants to know out how many of an item are in stock the salesperson should key it as a quote, and should follow up on it ... and so on.
If they don't key it then they are not getting that customers price (from price list) that customers discount (from discounts) and they are not getting the available stock.
If they do key it, they can follow it up, you can look at patterns among customers, find the price sensitive ones, find the service aware ones and so on, adjust your pitch to suit the customer, convert more sales.
