I'd also really like to be able to change the pdf name as it's getting attached to an email.
We'd use it for purchase orders to supplier, sales order confirmations, invoices etc.
Are there any additions that could make this happen?

If you upgrade to Report Designer 1.3 (Free upgrade for everyone) you can now do this.

having just upgraded to the new reporter version I am still having a problem finding out where the necessary options are to add the invoice number into the pdf name?

You can do it now!
On the Email Settings screen (Email Options) you should see a button labeled Filename, click it and the expression editor should open and you can enter an expression for the filename.
