I think there has been a misunderstanding as that is not how it works.

It may be that they need the PC hosting the data turned on.

The data is on a server and all other users can log in

The error she gets is

“An error occurred while trying to connect tot eh SAGE Data Service. The application must now close”.

Sage have told her

I have discussed this with SAGE who have suggested it is a conflict of permissions between my PC and the Server and the It department need to look at it.

We run a simple workgroup network and therefore the users only login to their own PC and not the server

Was just able to get onto her pc and looks like there was a configuration issue, went into credential manager (Windows 7) and re entered password and was then able to login - so this one sorted now - thanks

Would appear that I was incorrect and she and other users were getting the same error message first thing each day.

However, if the user clicks ok and tries again on the 4th attempt they see the list of companies and are then able to login

We started some months ago whilst still on ver 21 doing a full backup each evening through windows by first stopping the data service and then restarting it after the backup has completed.

Have just now disabled that backup so that the service does not stop and restart and the problem seems to have been resolved, however should the server be restarted for updates etc am pretty sure it will occur again for the first login.

Any ideas please ?

Unfortunately it is unclear what the issue is.

Can other users log in?
If you lo go to windows on her PC as one of the users who can log in can you access sage?
If you log in as the user on a different PC does it work?

This will tell us if it is an installation issue just for this user,if it is a machine issue just for this PC or if it is a system wide issue.

You do not need to stop the data service to backup.

A server backup is useless because check data has not been run.

I understand regarding the backup and that is fine - we are now doing scheduled backups each evening and they are being copied off and taken offsite.

What I still don't understand is why when clients try to login it looks like they will be unable to immediately after a server restart ?

This will only be proved to happen once Windows updates are installed and the server restarted.

Do you think it might be worth uninstalling the data service and reinstalling it ? We only have the data service installed on the server and not Sage Accounts itself

I can think of no reason to use the service.

I would always install the whole program this gives you a front end on the server to troubleshoot any problems and to do any data intensive operations like checking data, reindexing and compression..
