Connecting to a Sage Database over VPN

Post by emacle » 26 Apr 2006, 14:53

Hi. I've been asked to setup 2 remote offices that will connect to our main office via VPN over Broadband (Dsl 2meg) connections. I've set up one office and sage line 50 connects to the account database perfectly, but then it just takes an age to load anything. Sage support assure me that this should be only slightly slower than accessing it from a local machine, but in reality, this thing is taking upto 30 seconds or more for a process that takes less than a second locally.

Has anyone setup sage in this manner before, has anyone got any possibly causes for this. I'm thinking it's just a bandwidth issue, but Sage support were convinced that a 2meg broadband connection was adequate.

In short. The database is stored on a remote server, the accountant is connecting to this database using Sage installed on his local workstation, but connecting to the database path using a VPN and mapped network drive. Over a 2meg broadband link. It goes very very slow, and takes nearly 30-60seconds or more to open a screen or run the Reconciliation for example.

Thanks in advance.
Lee

If you want to run sage remotley at any speed then you are NEVER going to be able to do it with a VPN.

Network users with a 10Mb networks have really serious performance issues.

You say you are using a ADSL well forget the headline download speed, at one end you will be uploading and that will be the bottleneck.

ADSL normally has a 250K upstream 400 on the new Max service going to 700 on the Max Premium.

You are never going to get nearly enough bandwidth to run any network intensive application such as Sage.

There are a couple of solutions.

There are some products that will take transactions from one copy of sage and merge/add them to another. This is fine if the remote site is just entering orders invoices or something like that.

The alternatives other than that are to use a thin client connected to a machine running the application at the central site.

No thin client is perfect. Citrix Metaframe is the best, MS Terminal Server Works fine, GoTo MyPC is a workable product and not too expensive. VNC is free and works, but you will need to upgrade the central line to ADSL MAX to get good performance.

All the thin clients could be run over the VPN, the VPN actually adds overhead, you could (with proper firewall provision, do it using real IP's if your ISP will give them to you. AAISP are who we use, they will give you whatever IP's you need without any hassle they even do IP6, very network orientated, MAX lines available.
