I want to show discount on a sales order or quote.
There are several invoice layouts that show discounts, but none in sales order layouts and I am not sure if they can be added.

This should not be a problem.
You just need to add the relevant fields onto the sales order.
If you open up an invoice that has the discounts on it and open up a sales order it will make life easier.
There are three main central sections for the line items. the first one is never printed, no idea why it is there, perhaps just to act as an alignment guide for the sections beneath
Anyway, you probably want to shrink the size of the stock code field and the description and shunt them over to the left hand side to make some room for the extra fields.
You can refer to the discounted invoice as a guide to find the names of the fields that you need. The Table Name however will need changing from INVOICE_ITEMS to SOP_ITEMS.
